The People's Community Garden

"The cabin has been a fantastic base for the Community Garden project on Maidenhall allotments – a cosy retreat in wet weather and somewhere to get out of the sun and have a sit-down and cool drink in the summer.

The office is the nerve centre of the project – where Project Co-ordinator Susannah taps away on her computer (powered by wind energy wired into the cabin) and takes calls on her mobile, while volunteers gather in the main room for a cuppa and a chat, and talk through ideas with Dan, Ric or Steven – the Horticultural Site Co-ordinators.

The kitchenette is idea for brewing up (on a gas camping stove plumbed in under the work top), with ample space for storage of cups and the all-important biccies.

We have mounted notice boards throughout the cabin and have space for storage and shelving, with a substantial desk and filing cabinet in the office.

Because the project was unable to afford a connection to the mains, it has gone with green energy instead – a better low-carbon option in line with the project’s aims.

A huge benefit is that the cabin is secure, and easy to open and close. This is very important for the tool shed at the side of the cabin – which is pretty spacious and able to take all our machinery, barrows, tools and other items."
